You suppressed profiles, and Klaviyo still bills the old tier: here's why

Klaviyo bills on active profiles: anyone it could email. Suppressed profiles don't count. But the billing rule only works one way: if your active profiles grow past your plan, Klaviyo may upgrade you automatically at the next cycle; if you suppress thousands of profiles, your plan stays where it is until you downgrade it yourself.
Runs in your browser; your list never leaves it. Tier prices are a snapshot you can edit.
Suppress in bulk
Build a segment of profiles you won't email: no opens or clicks in 6–12 months, bounced, obvious bots and test sign-ups. Keep recent customers out, whatever their engagement.
In Audience → Lists & segments, open the segment's menu and choose Suppress current members. It applies to whoever is in the segment now, not to people who join it later, so repeat it on a schedule.
Only Owner, Admin and Manager roles can suppress.
Then downgrade
Wait until the active profile count has dropped (check it in your billing page).
Pick the tier that fits the new count with room for a month's growth, and change the plan yourself in billing. A Klaviyo employee confirmed in the community: "Klaviyo cannot auto-downgrade your plan; if you want to downgrade, you must do so manually."
Diary a monthly check: active profiles creep back up through checkout emails and pop-ups, and the upgrade is automatic.
What suppression doesn't do
Suppressed profiles keep their history, and Klaviyo community answers say they can still receive events and attribute updates, and appear in synced ad audiences.
A suppressed profile that resubscribes becomes active again, and billable.
Suppressing doesn't delete anyone. Deleting is permanent, so export first if you ever might.
